 Pioneer Life Suitcase

A museum educator presents historical information and stories relating to the lives of the early pioneers who settled in the Mahoning Valley between 1796 and 1830. Artifacts include:

 

·        Maps

·        Household tools

·        Kitchen "appliances"

·        Lighting equipment

·        Toys

·        Clothing

Curriculum Standards Met with Suitcase Presentation

Kindergarten

·        communication skills: listening, following instructions, asking questions

·        compare same and different

 

1st grade

·        use artifacts to learn about family life in the past

·        compare past and present

·        see similarities and differences

 

2nd grade

·        learn about contributions of different groups

 

4th grade

·        similarities and differences in customs and traditions

·        availability and use of resources

·        production of goods and services

·        obtaining and using income

 

5th grade

·        how different environments and resources affect human activity

·        cultural traditions of Native Americans

 

8th grade

·        interactions of Native Americans and settlers

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society educates and promotes an interest in the history of the Mahoning Valley by collecting, preserving, and developing material representative of the people who have inhabited the region.
