1) Canal Length

The P&O canal was 82 miles long. If 67 miles of the canal were in Ohio, how many miles of canal were in Pennsylvania?

2) Modern Maps

Use a modern map to measure the distance from the Beaver River in Pennsylvania to Akron where the Ohio and Erie Canal was.  How many miles is it?  How much shorter or longer was the P&O canal?  Why?

3) Drawing Boats

Draw a rectangle in the same proportions as a canal boat (6 units by 1 unit).  Would this shape be easy to maneuver?  Could you turn a sharp corner with it?  What does this tell you about the shape of the canal?

4) Manufacturing Plants

Trace the progression: river, river trails, canals, railroads.  How many reasons can you think of for a manufacturing plant to be located by a river? (for workers to get there easily, to ship in raw materials, to ship out finished products, to have lots of water to use, etc.)

5) Timetables

Use the railroad timetable to create math problems: how long was the trip from Cleveland to Youngstown?  Did it take more or less time to travel from Youngstown to Cleveland?  Did the mail train or the express train longer to go from one end of the line to the other? And so on.
