Rabbi Samuel Meyer

Born August 6, 1920 in the Bronx, New York, Rabbi Samuel Meyer was ordained at Yavne Theological Seminary in March of 1947.

His early spiritual career was spent as an assistant director of youth activities of the National Council of Young Israel before becoming the leader of Congregation Agudath B’nai Israel in Lorain, Ohio. In 1970, he left Lorain for Allentown, Pa. where he was in charge of education and youth activities. A year later, he came to Youngstown and the Temple Anshe Emeth. When the temple merged with Emanu El Congregation in 1973, he became the leader of the new Temple El Emeth.

While in Youngstown, Rabbi Meyer served several community organizations including the board of the Child and Adult Mental Health Institute, the March of Dimes, the Commission on Human Needs, the Jewish Community Center, and the Zionists Organization of America. In 1975, he and Father George Balasko founded the Youngstown Christian - Jewish Dialogue. In 1986, he and Father Blasko received the B’nai B’rith, Knights of Columbus, Masonic Brotherhood Award. Rabbi Meyer was also honored in 1978 by Bonds for the State of Israel. He retired from the pulpit in 1990, but remained an active member of the Youngstown community.[1]
