Community Leaders The Jewish community in Youngstown has seen many influential and vibrant leaders over the last one hundred and seventy-one years. Since the first recorded Jewish settler, Jacob Spiegel, arrived in 1837, the city has been shaped by the Jewish people who have, and still do, call it home. The profiles featured on this page are by no means intended to suggest a complete list of all the important men and women who have shaped the Jewish community in the city. The Jewish Archives Collection at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society contains a variety of material, including immigration documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, on individuals and families from the Jewish community during the nineteenth and twentieth century. The figures presented on this page were chosen because they illustrate the spirit and progressiveness of Youngstown’s Jews. For the leading women of the community, please visit the Jewish women’s link. |
