Frances Greenberg

Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Frances Greenberg grew up in Lancaster. She received a B.A in Journalism and Advertising from Hood College and Penn State University. After graduation she moved to New York City where she worked for RCA- Victor Records in promotions and public relations.

In 1955, Fran married Dr. Milton Greenberg from Youngstown and returned to Ohio where she began to dedicate herself to community work. She was an active participant for thirty-five years in the Youngstown Chapter of Hadassah, B’nai B’rith, the Temple El Emeth Sisterhood, and the National Council of Jewish Women. In addition to membership, she was served on several committees including, president of the Brandeis Women’s Committee, chair of its Education Committee, chair of the NCJW’s educational mini-course, charter board member of the Youngstown Area Arts Council, chair of public relations for the Friends of Music of the Dana Institute, and board member of the YWCA. This short list of her extensive involvement illustrates her devotion to both the Jewish community and Youngstown as a whole.

Fran also served the Youngstown Symphony Society in several capacities including president, vice-president, secretary, chair of annual ticket drive, and chair of the Symphony Summer Festival. In 1979, she was nominated for Youngstown Woman of the Year. Fran was honored again in 1984 when the Symphony Society established the Frances Greenberg Award (handed out annually for outstanding board service). Throughout her life, she continued to be an active volunteer and participant in various organizations benefiting the arts and cultural institutions of Youngstown.[1]
