Who are we:
The Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley is a non-profit corporation with membership currently consisting of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, Youngstown State University, and the shareholders of the former WKBN Broadcasting Corporation. Each corporate or institutional member is represented on the Board of Trustees of the Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley. The organization's mission is to preserve the historical collections entrusted to it and to support the educational programs of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and Youngstown State University.
The project is the legacy of Warren P. Williamson, Jr. (1900-1996), a pioneer radio and television broadcaster in the Mahoning Valley who founded WKBN Broadcasting Corporation in 1926. WKBN operated AM and FM radio stations and a UHF television station in the Mahoning Valley market until 1997. All of these stations were affiliates of the CBS Radio and Television Network. Fully realizing and appreciating the tremendous historical and educational value of the materials his company had accumulated since its founding, Mr. Williamson made the initial contribution of funds to start the Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley in 1994. In 1995 WKBN Broadcasting Corporation began to donate its corporate archives, which included business records, marketing materials, broadcasting equipment, radio air check recordings and extensive television news film and videotape libraries. Since then other local media outlets and individuals have contributed historical materials to the Business and Media Archives the Mahoning Valley collection.
The three member institutions of the Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley are very active in maintaining the collection. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society provides staff to manage the day-to-day operations and ongoing care of the historical materials. Second and third generation members of the Williamson family provide generous financial support and participate in management and policy decisions on the Board of Trustees level. Youngstown State University has regular faculty, staff and student involvement in the collection, houses the news film library in a secure location and maintains the on-line index for the news film at http://www.maag.ysu.edu/wkbn/wkbn.html. Currently YSU can only offer searches for our film holdings, but you can look here for film from 1955 - 1978: and here for tapes from 1976 - 1995. These are very large files, and will take a while to download. *Please note to search for something on a web page, at the very top of the screen under "edit" select "Find (on this page)" and enter a search word. If you have any questions please contact the BMAMV at business_media@mahoninghistory.org
