Challenges Facing

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society

As a contemporary museum housed within a historic structure, The Mahoning Valley Historical Society faces many challenges:

n In 1977, the Arms Museum first received professional accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM), a prestigious recognition achieved by fewer than 10% of American Museums.  During a recent accreditation review, AAM examiners noted that the Historical Society's lack of space was at a crisis point in its institutional development.

n While the beautifully proportioned rooms at Greystone are ideal backdrops for the fine decorative arts collection, they are not generally suited for exhibits in terms of space or visual context.

n The lack of space compromises collection management and operations - current storage areas are of varied quality of security and climate control, two primary factors for museum-worthy treatment of collections.

n While every effort has been made to maximize storage space, the Historical Society can no longer accept most materials that are offered.  The inability to actively collect is a critical problem for any historical society, preventing it from fulfilling its mission.

n There is a distinct lack of educational and public meeting space that limits programming, events and community outreach.  There is also a need for more administrative space.

n The Business and Media Archives, destined for a national reputation that will distinguish the Historical Society, has limited storage and curatorial space.

n The multiple uses of Greystone are taxing on its fabric as a historic residence.

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society educates and promotes an interest in the history of the Mahoning Valley by collecting, preserving, and developing material representative of the people who have inhabited the region.
